Patriotic Hopscotch

We have a Veteran's home nearby.  One of ladies in our quilt guild organized and collected lap quilts for each of the 250 (or so) residents.  Here's my first quilt for the VA.

I got this pattern "Hopscotch" free on my first Shop Hop.  It calls for one yard of three fabrics.  I used 2 fat quarter for each color and made it half the size of the pattern.

I used soft red fleece for the backing (and no batting) and practiced my FMQing some more.  I am hoping that the veteran who receives this quilt will not be offended by my amateur quilting.  Perhaps he'll have poor eyesight and won't notice!

Einstein's Theory

My quilt guild makes quilts for our local children.  Some are donated to the hospital, some go to children removed from their homes, and some go to the local women's shelter.  I read somewhere that boy quilts, especially for older boys, are in short supply.  Here's a quilt I made from select fabrics in Einstein's Baby charm pack and some black kona cotton.

Here's a closer look at those fabulous geometric designs!
More examples of my earliest FMQing. I did random stippling in the quilt top, and big loops in the border.

The border fabric is from the seconds corner of my local quilt shop (LQS).  I made the backing from that fabric too.  I love $1.99/yard fabric!  I have found LOTS of great fabrics in the seconds corner.  Very few of them have visible reasons for being there! I don't complain, I just add to my stash!

Those legs belong to my son.  Quilt-holder is just one of his many talents!

Red Dresden

I made a few Dresden plate wall hangings to sell at our crafts fairs.  I saved one and gave it to my Secret Santa at the office.

The black and white fabrics are leftovers from my Black Irish Limey Quilt.  You might recognize the red fabric from Peggy's quilt.  Love that red fabric.  Still have a little in my stash.  You'll see it again, I promise!

Karen's Uniform Wall Hanging

Last year, Karen retired from the Forest Service.  I had this idea brewing for awhile, so Karen's retirement seemed like a perfect time to create.  I gathered up several discarded Forest Service uniform components and started putting things together.  I didn't have much of a plan when I started, so the wall hanging took on a life of its own.  It turned out to be twice the size I had in mind!
The while and beige backgrounds are cut from our casual uniform polo shirts. The dark green is from our casual uniform trousers and the lighter greens are from our field uniform shirts.

The sun is from a yellow Nomex shirt (heat resistant material for firefighting).

The stains on the sun are from drip torch fuel (combination of gas and diesel used for back burning or prescribed fires).    The tree trunk is made from a gray T-shirt Jody donated from MOCC, our fire disptach center.

The oak leaves and the small pine trees were cut using Sizzix die cuts and my Big Shot.  I quilted straight line rays out from the sun, and quilted in a circle within the sun.  I finally took the plunge and tried free motion quilting (FMQ) for the leaves.  As I gained more confidence, I did the more FMQ to enhance the hills and grass.

Another first for me was to create a quilt label.  I used Sew-In Colorfast Fabric sheets for Ink Jet Printers (June Taylor product).  It's an iron-on label I created on my computer.  If you look closely, you'll see that I scorched the label by leaving my iron in one place too long.  See the discoloring on the left and the perfect circles from my iron surface?  Having a scorched label seemed extremely appropriate for this memory quilt!

Christmas Tree Wall hanging

Last fall, Theresa, Kelly, and I decided to try our luck at craft fairs.  For one of the fairs, we were supposed to bring an item valued at $25 for giveaways.  I made this scrappy Christmas tree wallhanging.

This was one of my first attempts at free-motion quilting (FMQ) with my domestic sewing machine. I used my walking foot to quilt the straight lines of the tree, then did some FMQ in the background.
I didn't get a very good picture of the quilting (probably on purpose!).  I put a hanging sleeve at the top.

My friend Kelly won first choice of the giveaways and she chose my tree wall hanging!

More Stack N Whack blocks

Barb and I swapped fabrics at the Stack N Whack class. I gave her a few yards of my blue and she gave me this beautiful piece.

As soon as I finished my blue blocks, I cut more blocks from Barb's fabric. It was SSSOOOO much easier to prep the material for cutting the second time around -- it only took me a few minutes, since I knew what I was doing this time! I made three blocks and auditioned them on different background fabrics. Which one do you like best? My son picked the red. I'm still undecided.

They look Christmasy, don't they?

Stack N Whack Quilt blocks

Saturday, I took a Stack N Whack Quilt class at a LQS, Uniquely Yours.  I had a great time, and met some fabulous quilting ladies!  Here's a shout out to Barb, Carol, Ruth, and Janet!  What's more fun than quilting? Quilting with friends!

Here are the finished blocks from that class.

Aren't they amazing?  Here's a picture of the fabric I used to make these beauties...
